Using Social Networks to Build Your Business

Written By: Bernadette Cooper - Jun• 21•10

Social media is a vital element of modern successful business practices. Using social networks to build your business is the most cost effective way to get exposure for your business. For centuries, business owners have used word of mouth to spread the word about their products and services. By utilizing the Internet, business owners are now able to reach either a broad section of the population or a more precise, targeted sector. Used as a free or nearly free form of advertising, business owners, marketers and entrepreneurs can increase sales and build a steady customer base by choosing the right venue and interacting with people on a consistent basis.

There are two keys to success when using social networks to build your business. Identifying your target market is the most important factor in choosing which networks to use. You need to go where you will receive the most interest in your product or service. The second key is in knowing how to use online social networks to your best advantage. There is an unwritten protocol to follow when interacting in the online arena.

Networking is about building relationships, whether you do it in person, over the phone, or online. The first thing to do after choosing a social network is to build your online presence. Be yourself, and give a glimpse into what you do. This does not mean to put your big sales pitch on your profile page! Mention what you do, how you started, and why you love it. Be friendly, tactful, and polite, and most of all, have FUN!

The second thing to do is add friends. You may start with people you know, but you are looking for new customers or clients, so do some pre-qualifying. Begin by searching groups and discussion boards that have a common interest in your product or service area. Make a few comments yourself, but remember not to add your sales pitch! As you read posts in the groups or discussion boards, check out profiles of people who make interesting comments. Send those people a friend request, and make it personal. Mention how you came to look at their profile and that you like their response or philosophy.

The third step in building a relationship in your new virtual world is to add value. This is done by sharing relevant information. Know your market and stay up-to-date with current events as they relate to your business. As you find relevant content or create your own, post it on social media sites that you have joined and share the links with your friends. You can share via bookmarking sites, micro-blogging, through your own self-hosted or free blog site, and videos. Remember that you can also share links to comments you have made on other people’s blogs and videos.

Once you have established yourself, you may want to offer some information about your business. Is your company having a sale or other promotion? Do you have free samples or incentives? Invite your growing friends list to take advantage of the special offer, or to attend a free webinar or conference call. Again, you must NOT bombard people with information. Just put your information up for people to see and wait for them to contact you.

Building relationships with others is what networking is all about. While it’s not a new concept, the methods employed in today’s business world are. Take the time to learn how to use social networks to build your business the right way, and success is sure to follow.
