Compact Florescent Light bulbs can be found in many homes today. While the initial cost can be high, the cost savings over time will be reflected in not having to replace them every few months and in lower utility bills. When we bought our home, we splurged & bought them for every fixture in the house. Since we had our daughter & son-in-law living in the finished basement and a steady stream of company visiting from Tennessee, we knew we’d start saving right off the bat.
What most people don’t know about these wonderful little piggy banks is that they cannot be tossed in the garbage like regular incandescent bulbs. Because of the small amount of mercury in them, they must be disposed of as hazardous waste. Rather than make a special trip to the nearest facility that handles such waste, you can take used CFLs to your local Home Depot and they will recycle them properly.
